An application for a visitor who wishes to possess firearms to which section 1 of the Firearms Act 1968 applies, or possess, purchase or acquire any ammunition to which that section applies whilst in Great Britain or to possess a shot gun to which section 2 of the Act applies must be made via a person resident ‘a sponsor’ in Great Britain.
Police Scotland will only deal with the sponsor.
Police Scotland do not allow Visitors Permits to be submitted electronically.
PLEASE NOTE: Your Sponsor requires your documents 12 weeks prior to your arrival in Scotland.
There may be extenuating circumstances what an application is made close to the date on which the applicant wishes to travel to Scotland, your Sponsor and Police Scotland will always make every effort to process late applications on time, but however this cannot be guaranteed. To ensure that you have your Visitors Permits in good time for your departure, please allow the recommended 12 week process time.
The 12 Week Process.
Post your original or a full copy of the European Firearms Pass if the permit is requested by an EEC resident or a copy of the Visitors Hunting Permit valid in their home country or Certificate of Good Conduct – (available from the Visitor’s home Police/Sheriff department) to your Sponsor.
Your Sponsor will check that your documents are correct, thus enabling him to fill out the Visitors Permit application forms with your information.
Once the applications are completed, your Sponsor will post your documents with the appropriate fee to Police Scotland.
Once the permits are granted, Police Scotland will post the licences to your Sponsor, who in turn will post them to you.
